Mount Olympus from Larissa, Thessaly, Greece, Edward Lear 1850–85

Eugenides is a young man of twists and turns from a made up land heavily inspired by the Hellenic world, where the gods are distant but factual. He is petulant, clever, and very good at throwing ink pots. Also, he can steal anything.

Eugenides, wounded and tired and surrounded by the walls and the stench of the prison where he had lost his hand, responded, not mocking but snarling, “Am I king?”

The way a crack in the face of a dam widens with accelerating speed, letting more and more water surge through, Teleus’s voice rose with every word until he was shouting loud enough to be heard across a parade ground, the deep profundo painful in the small cell. “Do you think that matters?” he bellowed. “Do you really imagine it is your orders taken here?”

PACE. I try to clear tags once a day, but can be faster or slower depending on circumstances and workload. I'm on PST so if I'm around to boomerang it's probably late at night. I'm always happy to backtag, though, so don't hesitate to tag an ancient thread if you want to keep it going.

FOURTH-WALLING. This is not something I generally enjoy.

BRACKETS / PROSE. I'm comfortable with either one. Usually I default to [ brackets ], but I am happy to match a preference.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS. Gen is from a YA canon, but his source material still touches on some darker topics, including violence, depression, fantasy misogyny, and slavery. Let me know if you'd like to avoid any topic in particular or opt-out entirely. I have no specific triggers.

IC Permissions

VIOLENCE. Generally Gen acts in a way that makes people want to punch him, so scuffing is well and good and I like to thread action scenes. Serious injury is something I prefer to have discussed beforehand but it's entirely possible and canon appropriate.

MAGIC/PSYCHICS. Gen is an entirely unremarkable human from a canon with no magic or mind-reading to speak of. He's defenseless against psychic prodding and would register as a null magically. He is touched by the gods, but not in a way that confers any special powers or abilities.

SHIPPING. In love with disaster. I'm willing to try something if it goes there.

Spoilers

⪢ So, Queen's Thief is a particularly twisty series, and I can't play Gen from the middle of the third book without spoiling books one and two. Sorry for ruining the series, everybody, still read it though.

I've read through The Return of the Thief.

kleptocracy (n.)

(from Ancient Greek κλέπτης (kléptēs, “thief”), κλέπτω (kléptō, “steal”); and from the Ancient Greek suffix -κρατία (-kratía), from κράτος (krátos, “power, rule”; klépto- thieves + -kratos rule, literally "rule by thieves")

First impressions
NAME. Eugenides / Ευγενιδες / “Gen”
DOB/AGE. About nineteen.1
HAIR/EYE. Dark / dark.
HEIGHT/WEIGHT. 5′9″, 160lbs
CANONPOINT. c. The King of Attolia

APPEARANCE. Gen has dark features, a sallow feather-shaped scar on his cheek, a sideways sort of posture and a wiry build. He can seem alternately many more than his years very much like a child. He is missing his right hand, and wears a hook in its place.

Eugenides has pale marks that on ankles and wrist that echo manacles from a stint in prison, and other scars from various fights running elsewhere across his body. Mostly, he wears long robes with loose, bell-shaped sleeves to disguise these marks.

LANGUAGE. A native of Eddis, Gen speaks a fantasy erstaz Greek, recognizable as demotic. He understands the archaic form of his language and has upper-class diction, though he can affect the accents of various nations and social classes when he wants to.

BODY LANGUAGE. Gen moves with an easy and practiced grace, but can still come across lazy and diffident. He makes certain gestures with his hands but is limited by only having one of them.

Abilities

THIEVERY. Eugenides has trained nearly from birth as a thief. He is very adept at scaling walls, sneaking around picking pockets, and general slight-of-hand. He can also pick locks, but his knowledge is based in his early modern world and not post-electronic technology.

FIGHTING. Even with one hand Gen is an extremely talented swordsman, better than most professional soldiers and assassins and capable of fending off multiple attackers like a character from a novel.

GENERAL. Gen is an aristocrat by birth and spent his childhood at court. He is capable of all the basic aristocrat things: carrying on a polite conversation, choosing not to carry on a polite conversation, dancing, etiquette. He has a bookish bent and interested in literature and philosophy. He is a terrible horseman.

Good grief, gods do what they like.
They call down hurricanes with a whisper
or send off a tsunami the way you would a love letter.
If they have a whim, they make some henchmen
fix it up, like those idiots in the Iliad.
