Walking

26 Sep

We have been walking and walking lately. Will’s school is almost a mile and a half from home.

(We cross the street 19 times one-way, and I’m obsessed with hitting cross-walk lights just right.)

The only option if/when we drive him to school is to hopefully find street parking, pay to park, and walk him up to the door, so I’ve chosen to walk so far.

Image

Now, whenever we drive somewhere, (to a friend’s house, or a church activity) Nora always asks, “Why we driving?” and I say, “We’re going somewhere far away, we need to drive.” and she answers, “I can walk far, Mom. I want to walk!”

We do walk. A lot. And I love to walk, so it’s working.

We’ll have to see how it works in the winter. . .

Moving. . .

24 Sep

Today my parents are just finishing packing up and cleaning out.

They are moving! I can hardly believe it.

ImageIf I’ve calculated it right, they’ve lived here in this home for almost 20 years.

ImageI want to keep this simple, so I don’t get too emotional, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite memories growing up here.

ImageDecorating for Christmas is definitely top on the list. Even if our hands nearly froze off every time we hung the garland around the porch.

ImageSleeping out on the porch or the deck all summer long, the stars were always bright.

ImageMore specifically, spending our entire first July living in the house helping Dad install the sprinklers in the yard.

Image

Can’t forget sweet Great Grandma Leavitt sitting on the porch reading Reader’s Digest and enjoying the view.

Image

Or Sunday concerts provided by everyone in the family at one point or another. (Yes, Ryan, you did sing a song or two in your life.)

Image

The delicious smell of roast in the oven when we came home from church.

ImageAnd late night Algebra lessons given at the table.

ImageLike I said, I’m really keeping this short and sweet. I could go on for hours.

The comforting mountain nearby with the crisp canyon air blowing down the street was just the place to raise me.

Busy busy

19 Sep

Making gingerbread cookie dough for Joy School tomorrow!

Image“Run, run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!”

What’s going on

18 Sep

Here’s what’s happening at our house:

The CTU (Chicago Teachers’ Union) strike is over!! Will is heading back to school tomorrow!

Image

Nora is asking to take her baby and stroller everywhere we go. Unfortunately, that’s not always a good idea in this busy city.

ImageI had fun this week making a cute little outfit for my friends new baby:

Image

Travis arrived safe and sound last week from a 8-day trip to Guatemala. He thankfully made it out of that country just before a volcano erupted. We are blessed.

I feel blessed tonight: pumpkin cookies in the oven and cool weather in the forecast.

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE FALL!!! here before?

A friend of mine said today, “I just love this time of year. It’s like I wake up! I feel so productive.”

I thought that was a good way to put it. Something about getting back on a real schedule, and wearing a jacket is just perfect.

Downer

12 Sep

I don’t mean to be a “downer” but I’m starting to get pretty upset about the strike. I can’t believe these people can’t just work out their disagreement and let the kids get back to school!!

Check out the news.

I want to figure out a way to get a message to all the parents in the city and start picketing ourselves.

On a funny note:

ImageNora loves ketchup on everything. Today: ketchup + brownies.

Oh boy! I got joy!

11 Sep

We had our first day of Joy School today!

Image

Nora gets to share me, and her toys twice a week for the rest of the year.

Image

And she’s thrilled!

Strike!

10 Sep

ImageWe found a great place to go bowling last week!

ImagePizza and 35 lanes.

ImageA dollar for a game and a dollar for shoes per person on Monday afternoons!

ImageTravis won, Nora came in second.

ImageI came in last. I’m thinking of making Mondays: “Bowl With Nora on Monday Afternoon” to try and improve my skills.

Image

It was a great way to spend an afternoon with the family.

On another, “strike” note, we’ll be looking for something for Will to do again tomorrow afternoon. The teachers are on strike here in Chicago!

Quiet

6 Sep

I found a fun link to some facts about this great city, here.

(I’ll understand if you don’t read it all, I didn’t either.)

It’s just amazing to me that so much is happening around me, yet our little home feels so peaceful and quiet.

Image

Picture on our deck, thanks to Annie!

Even on our deck, out in middle of the city, it feels quiet.

Lundgreen visit continued

5 Sep

A visit with family is always wonderful.

Image

ImageI love that you can just pick up where you left off, even if it’s been a while

(like a year),

Imageand enjoy being with some of your best friends.

(Oh, thanks lovely person in the background!)

(Long story short, Nora’s teeth went into my head at the pool = forehead Band-aid for 2 weeks.)

Image

and of course it’s hard to resist posting a bad picture of your sister, just so her first taxi ride is documented:

Come again!

Surprise!

4 Sep

Two weeks ago, Will answered our door to one of the best surprises he could ask for.

Image

My sister Erin and her family made plans to visit us and we kept it a secret.

Image

Water Taxi

Will’s jaw dropped when he opened the door, he was stunned!

Image

Navy Pier

His favorite person?! Emery Lundgreen?! Here in our house?!

Image

He quickly had a list of things he had to show her.

Navy Pier

We packed in the fun and the good food.

Image

Chicago hot dog!

And even managed to get the kids to sleep at night. (Emery and Will couldn’t believe they got to have 5 sleepovers!!)

Image

We were like the circus coming down the street with 3 strollers,

Visiting The Willis Tower

But that’s okay. We had a blast!

Image

I still have a lot of pictures of their trip.

Looks like I’ll make this “to be continued. . . “
