Apr. 28th, 2024 10:38 amThe last couple of weeks have been busy as heck. I'm finally free, though, and I'm working all weekend to catch up on all the Tumblr, DW, and AO3 stuff I've been missing.
It's nice to be back in my own bed.
My goals for this week are:
-Get started on the fun little collaborative project I've been rotating in my mind for months - the person I'm working with said they'd be free today, hopefully!!! I am very excited

Sometimes Life is Good
Apr. 7th, 2024 04:49 pmMy D&D game ran really late last night. Almost 1am. Unfortunately, though the mind was willing, the body is weak and I am Suffering today. I thought today was going to be pretty miserable, honestly, and it did start off that way, but then...
One of my TMNT fics got Fanart!! by a very lovely person on Tumblr and it is gorgeous.
Not only that, it's a whole part of a scene, illustrated, which is just incredible. And humbling. I've spent the entire afternoon on cloud nine and I think I'm going to be riding this high for a while. I haven't felt this energized in a million years.
Then the good vibes continued: I was brave and reached out to someone to collaborate on a TMNT Thing, and this person said yes!! I can't say too much more on it yet, and we won't be able to dig into it for about a week or so, but it's been something I've been wanting to do for months but never got up the courage to reach out and send over a proposal for until now. And I'm so very glad I did.
All in all, a spectacular turnaround. Sometimes it's worth getting out of bed, actually. :D

I'm thinking hard about what a TMNT community on Dreamwidth could look like. I've found a really helpful masterpost here that I've been reading through which has given me a lot to consider. Some of my main takeaways at the moment are that fostering an active community takes work, and requires frequent posts of a couple of certain varieties to grow engagement.
My biggest concern for a TMNT comm right now is that I don't have a guarantee of many, or any, people coming out of the woodwork to join - although it's absolutely possible, I can't bank on it. I don't want to flood a small number of people's reading pages with tons of posts that no one is replying to and that aren't relevant to their specific interests within the wider TMNT media sphere. Despite that, I do want to be clear that I understand that in the process of building momentum in a community, there may be periods where no one has time or interest in conversing and I might be talking to myself, and I'm *totally* okay with that - I won't take it personally and I don't want anyone to feel pressured to respond to everything.
I'm thinking of starting slow and building up steam over time. Here are some ideas I've had for potential regular, somewhat scheduled posts:

Ninja Turtles Allbingo Fest: April 1-30!

April begins tomorrow, which means the
allbingo Ninja Turtles fest I'm hosting kicks off! The prompt post is here, for anyone interested in checking out the public cards or generating your own.Any size card is welcome, from 2x2 on up! The prompts can be used for any fandom and medium, and you're free to interpret the prompts however you see fit, but I'm sure it will not be surprising to hear that I'm planning on all Ninja Turtles fills myself. :)
(There are multiple sets of prompts available, including one set with TMNT-specific characters and settings, but it can be easily excluded from a generated bingo card. I included that set in my card.)

The other existing TMNT communities have mods that have been inactive for years, and/or were last posted to almost a decade ago.
I guess I'm thinking, I'd really like to promote a TMNT community in some of the community promotion comms on Dreamwidth - on the distant possibility of finding more ninja turtle fans, or having a clear landing spot for any fans newly joining Dreamwidth in the future - and I'd rather it be a community with active mods. And if that has to be me, I'm up for doing some regular posting to keep it alive. I think for my own sake, a gen community would be easiest to handle, although I do realize that might limit engagement, so I'm not 100% on that.
I haven't decided for sure if I'm going to go through with it, yet, but I'm seriously mulling it over.

Writing progress!
Mar. 30th, 2024 04:19 pmIn celebration of *finally* getting the next chapter of the kidfic 'Cause Your Future's Ready to Shine sorted out for posting later this week, and to probably no one's shock it's actually going to be four chapters long, here is a (rough WIP) scene that takes place a bit before said chapter, from the Splinter-and-Lou-centric oneshot.
Some context is probably necessary. This all takes place in a 2k3/ROTTMNT crossover, a Same As It Never Was AU wherein 2k3 Donatello's disappearance was due to him accidentally falling through a portal into the Rise universe. It's been a decade of depression and isolation for Don, but recently he was able to reconnect with his brothers spiritually through the astral plane; though they're still separated physically, they meet regularly in that space between, now, and he's been on a journey of healing and growing since then.
Less than a week before this snippet, Don's security cameras caught the Rise turtles and Splinter making their way through the sewers, looking for a place to set down roots, and Don offered up his tiny home. Rise Splinter introduced himself as Lou, but hasn't said much more about where they all came from or how they were mutated, and Don hasn't asked.
I'm still working out the Don & Lou household dynamics, but to be fair, so are they.

Cooking with Curries
Mar. 26th, 2024 05:04 pmI cooked my favorite dish today: Thai green curry!
When I make it, I usually follow this recipe from TinEats, using maesri curry paste with the suggested additives, and with only a few substitutions: I put in a pinch of MSG in place of fish sauce, and I change out different vegetables.
(After purchasing my first official bottle of fish sauce, I cracked it open and gave it a sniff, then closed it back up immediately! I do not do fish; I don't know why I thought fish sauce would be anything other than The Concentrated Essence Of. It worked out, though - we sprayed the bushes with it, and the deer stayed far away. All natural pest control! And one of the reasons fish sauce is in recipes is for the umami flavor, which MSG is all about.)
I have a little tree in my house specifically for this dish! Last year, I purchased a makrut lime tree from One Green World, and it sits in my kitchen until the days I decide to pop open the green curry paste. Or, sometimes when I just want to add a touch of lime to a stir fry!

I also grow my own thai holy basil from seed, and I have a ginger plant. I've been trying to grow lemongrass, but I can't seem to get thick enough stems to make it truly usable in recipes.
For vegetables, restaurants will usually throw in eggplant along with a random assortment of other things (and I will gladly eat it every time!), but when I cook at home, I prefer to ditch the eggplant and throw in green pepper chunks, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots.
Warning - this dish packs some heat! The flavors, though, are worth it.

One of the WIPs I would really like to make some progress on this week is the Leo-centric oneshot in the Hold Every Memory series.
I'm still struggling to get 2k3 Leo's character down, and not only that, but I have to extrapolate out ten years into the SAINW apocalypse at the same time. Eugh boy.
Here's one scene where I feel like I'm starting to move in the right direction with semi-apocalyptic 2k3 Leo, though:

Upcoming TMNT Bingo event at Allbingo!

allbingo runs various themed months throughout the year. There were no plans in place yet for April's theme when I first joined the comm. The first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was published all the way back on April 30 of 1984 (for a May release), making it the 40th anniversary of the franchise, so I volunteered to run a TMNT-themed bingo fest!
I'm putting together prompt lists for participants to generate bingo cards, and it is so much fun! There will be a TMNT-specific prompt list, as well as a list of more general prompts (turtle, purple, skateboard, vigilante, etc.), a prompt list for pizza toppings, etc. Hopefully even those who aren't familiar with TMNT will end up with a bingo card they like.
I've been digging through various wikis all evening and enjoying myself quite a lot. Love making lists and organizing information, it's my favorite hobby.
Anyways, I just need to figure out banners and such and I'll be ready for April!Now I just have to finish the current month's Craft Bingo fills...
