Bug Description

Binary package hint: xdm

After upgrading to hardy, the font sizes in XDM are huge, no matter what Xresource file I use. It breaks most of the XDM themes.

user@ubuntu:~$ apt-cache policy xdm
xdm:
  Installed: 1:1.1.6-4
  Candidate: 1:1.1.6-4
  Version table:
 *** 1:1.1.6-4 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I will post a screenshot and the corresponding theme file.

Hey, I found out how you can solve the problem!

I had the same problem, tried out the debian-packages and so on...but didn't work at all.
The only reason why the fonts are scaled so huge is that the need the Face-Attribute!

This means your /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources should contain something like this:
xlogin.Login.greetFace: Comic Sans MS-16
xlogin.Login.face: Comic Sans MS-16
xlogin.Login.promptFace: Comic Sans MS-16
xlogin.Login.failFace: Comic Sans MS-16

Rather you should also give the items a font family...you can find a font via /usr/bin/xfontsel

You can use e.g. this to let xdm search a matching font (also in xdm/Xresources):
xlogin.Login.promtFont: *courier 10 pitch*

Greets,

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
