purge!
of course it didn't crosspost this one. from DW: the lovely and talented j00j gave me the idea to do this--so i have stolen some language from their post: Thanks to Livejournal's security breech and failure to communicate it, I've removed LJ accounts from my access list, as well as Dreamwidth accounts that haven't updated in about 99+ weeks.
If you've been reading but not posting and have changed your DW password, let me know and I'll add you back!(they had links to the LJ story--i do not.) i know that some of you recently came over here from LJ--i didn't change your status, obviously, even if you've never posted here. i am still subscribed to most of you so that if you suddenly revive your DW account, i think i'll see it on my reading page. this will crosspost to LJ. i'm going to do something similar over there though it might take a bit because i don't recall that LJ has a centralized area where i can see how long an account has been dormant, the way that DW does. and of course i can't stay subscribed if i unsubscribe you. but since this post will be my first public post in about three years, and since cross-posting is turned back on, if you come hunting my LJ to see what's up with me, hopefully i'll look active but locked down and you can drop me a note. LJ only note: it is incredibly cumbersome--it might be quicker to just delete access to any filters or something though then you might get a note that i added you when actually, i restricted your access to public posts. i did delete some people, already, though. meh. we'll see--whatever i did, the password breach is why. | | Friday, April 28th, 2017 | | 2:26 pm |
do i know you?
if you have a different name here than you had on LJ or if i wasn't subscribed to you on LJ but you're trying to connect with me here, would you leave me a note to tell me how you know me/i know you? all comments should be screened so that only i will read them. also, if you're reading this on LJ and have a DW account, would you tell me what it is? DW did a weird thing where a bunch of people i thought i had subscribed to, it didn't "take" and when i went to Manage Circle, I had to recheck the subscribed box. thank you to whoever gave me a month of paid account over here! i swear i will bring over some other usericons rather than this very very old picture of myself. not another talk radio day
as a lot of you know, i am a huge baseball fan, and that was my gateway into sports talk radio, and specifically. our very fine local sports talk radio station, 670 AM, the score. one thing that i like is that when something non-sports related but important is going on, there are several of the hosts who will take time off from sports to discuss it. this morning, jason goff, a black radio host, talked about the shootings of alton sterling and philando castile and what it's like to feel like your stories, your tragedies don't matter: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/07/07/watch-jason-goffs-poignantly-addresses-tragic-shootings-in-baton-rouge-falcon-heights/it's about 21 minutes long. there's a link to a place where you can find just the audio but there's a video on that page. he doesn't know what to do about the situation and i don't either, but these tragedies matter. | | Sunday, June 12th, 2016 | | 10:49 pm |

illinois people--transgender rights bill vote coming up
i received this notice in my e-mail, today: Tomorrow morning in Springfield, the Human Services House Committee will hold a hearing on State Rep.Greg Harris' (D-Chicago) vital records bill. The Alliance will be in Springfield speaking in support of HB 6073. If this bill passes, it would amend the Illinois Vital Records Act, which would remove surgery as a requirement for Intersex and Transgender individuals. This would allow individuals to change their sex designation on an Illinois birth certificate and would make it consistent with other Illinois and federal processes. i'm going to take a couple of minutes to get in touch with my state rep to let her know i support this bill, and you might want to do that, too. | | Saturday, March 5th, 2016 | | 5:45 pm |

jef smith has died
i didn't know jef well. i met him at wiscon and saw him at think galacticons. we were on a panel together once. he was so darned smart. he was so darned young. it seems unbelievable and yet, there it is. there's a gofundme for his funeral expenses and medical bills if you knew him and want to help out a bit: https://www.gofundme.com/bkrardz8to all of you who loved him, may his memory be a blessing. | | Friday, December 25th, 2015 | | 1:52 pm |

i've apparently moved to seattle
it's december and it's 56F/13.33C out. gray, not yet raining, but rain predicted for later on today. if i go to the market and people are throwing fish about, i'll know that i've somehow had my house moved and dropped in the pacific northwest. | | Thursday, December 10th, 2015 | | 12:12 pm |
today's earworm
the fourth movement of the brahms requiem: Wie lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen one of the most beautiful parts of a piece that would definitely be on my list of ten pieces of music i needed on a desert island. could be much much worse! | | Sunday, December 6th, 2015 | | 8:38 pm |

book recommendations?
i am not making this post because i have nothing to read, trust me. it is more that i was going through my date book (a physical object that i write things like when i have rehearsals, or dinner plans with people into, but i also write down books i read, movies i see, restaurants i eat at, etc.) and i noticed that while i have read a bunch of books lately that i liked to various degrees, it has been a while since i read a book that i would recommend. (the book that brought this thought to the surface is that i recently read allison bechdel's are you my mother which i am very glad to have read but i am hard put to think of someone to whom i would recommend it, including the person who loaned it to me.) what books would you recommend that i, personally read? what books have you been recommending to all and sundry, so that other folks who read this LJ can find them here? | | Monday, October 19th, 2015 | | 8:20 pm |

your cubs update
i'm happy for the cubs and i am rooting for them (even though i'm a white sox fan) but if i never hear "go cubs, go" again, it would be fine with me. | | Friday, August 28th, 2015 | | 9:39 pm |

for people who are bad at math?
it always puzzles me when a commercial says that such and such can be had for less than a dollar a day. usually that means that it can be had for within five cents less than a dollar a day. $0.95 x 365 is $346.75. i almost never think that's a great bargain for whatever they're selling. | | Sunday, April 5th, 2015 | | 11:35 am |
the excitement never stops
i found my pin cushion! (it's been missing for at least a year. considering where i found it, it must have fallen out of my sewing basket as i was transporting the thing from one place to another.) | | Monday, March 23rd, 2015 | | 9:30 am |
that's what she said
that's more than three inches. (it's snowing outside and 2-3 inches was predicted, but i don't think anyone told the snow that.) | | Friday, March 6th, 2015 | | 3:13 pm |
for my own memory
i always forget this. we've sung south african gospel songs in three languages so far: zulu, xhosa, and sotho. |
