Executive Director

Wendy Taylor is a certified Educational Therapist, qualified Orton-Gillingham practitioner, trained Educational Diagnostician, skilled IEP Coach, and the host of the Special Ed Strategist® Podcast.

As Executive Director of Learning Essentials, Wendy’s mission is to meet the individual needs of each student she serves. She maintains that every student is capable of success both in and out of the classroom, but finds that many students lack the strategies to achieve success. That is why she founded Learning Essentials to guide students and instill study habits that assist learners of all abilities to attain, if not exceed, their goals.

Wendy has extensive experience working with students of all ages and abilities, with a focus on learning differences and disabilities. Prior to founding Learning Essentials, she served as a faculty member at Saint Petersburg College, a supervisor of pre-service teachers, and a Montgomery County Public School teacher. A certified educator and qualified educational diagnostician, Wendy holds a B.S. in Social Science and Secondary Education from Frostburg State University and a M.Ed. in Special Education from George Mason University.

Jennifer Cooper, M.Ed.

Orton-Gillingham Reading Specialist & Special Education Tutor

Jennifer is an Orton-Gillingham tutor who has worked in education for over 20 years. After completing her Master of Teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University, she taught Pre K-5th grade for 15 years. Jennifer then received a Graduate Certificate in Emergent Literacy from Johns Hopkins University. Soon after, she began a new role as the reading specialist for the Bullis School, where she served for five years. To strengthen the lower school reading curriculum, she completed Orton-Gillingham training to incorporate multi-sensory learning and structured phonics into the program. As a tutor, Jennifer strives to engage students in playful, targeted lessons to help them become successful readers.

Bailey Savage-Addams is a certified special education teacher with Montgomery County Public Schools, dedicated to empowering students with disabilities through tailored support. She holds a doctorate in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Behavioral Health, a Bachelor’s in Deaf Education, and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction.

With extensive experience supporting students with disabilities, Bailey specializes in helping students develop study skills and executive function strategies to build confidence and achieve success. She bridges the gap between study skills and academic success across subjects like math, English, social studies, science, communication, and art.

Bailey equips students with the tools they need to thrive and is committed to creating a motivating and supportive learning environment. She inspires lifelong growth in every learner.

Susanne Fuller, M.Ed.

Special Education Tutor & Autism Support Specialist

Susanne Fuller is a special educator with over 10 years of experience in the field, focusing primarily on Autism Spectrum Disorder and inclusive practices in the school setting. She received her B.S. in Early Childhood Special Education from Union University in Jackson, TN, and a M.Ed. in Birth-Kindergarten: Interdisciplinary Study of Education and Development from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She has taught in North Carolina and Wisconsin before recently relocating to Washington, DC, with her family. Susanne has a passion for both supporting her students and assisting families in understanding their child’s needs and IEP.

Sarah Gayman is a certified educator with a background in Secondary English Education from The University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sarah moved to Maryland in 2013 after teaching in Pittsburgh. Her teaching experience includes 6th-8th grade English and Reading. Currently, Sarah is a 6th grade English and Reading General Education teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools. She utilizes creativity, real-world application, and student-centered activities with a focus on individual student interests while working with her students.

Jean Hickey, M. Ed.

Jean Hickey is a special educator. She has worked as a private tutor and educational consultant for over ten years in the Metropolitan area. She has twenty plus years of experience working with a variety of learning needs, including learning disabilities, ADD, Autism, Fragile X, Down Syndrome, Visual Cortical Blindness and Cerebral Palsy. Jean’s extensive background proves to be an excellent resource. In addition to private tutoring, she is available to review, develop and write Individualized Education Plans, write reports, consult with educational teams and advocate at IEP meetings. Jean earned a Bachelor’s degree in Severe Special Needs from Boston College and a Master’s degree in Special Education from University of Maryland, College Park. Jean provides a creative, life-learning approach to academics. She continually engages, challenges and develops the minds of her students.

Christina is a certified elementary teacher with her B.S. in Elementary Education and M.Ed. in Human Development from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has taught English (Grades 6-8) and Reading Intervention for Montgomery County Public Schools for the past 16 years. Christina is currently working on attaining her second M.Ed. as a Reading Specialist from Hood College. She loves tutoring students in reading and writing, using multi-sensory, research-based methods to improve decoding skills, comprehension, and fluency.

Wendy is a special educator with more than 15 years of cross-curricular experience working with diverse learners from the kindergarten to post-secondary level, in both private and public school settings. She plans lessons aligning with MCPS content standards and indicators, in addition to customizing lessons adapted to the individualized needs of each student. Her goal is to facilitate a positive, rewarding learning environment that fosters trust, curiosity, independence, academic success, and the joy of acquiring knowledge. Wendy earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education/Instructional Technology degrees from the University of Maryland.

Vicki Rotker, M.Ed.

Vicki Rotker, M.Ed.
Academic & Executive Function Coach

Vicki brings over 30 years of teaching experience in MCPS, where she created and taught the acclaimed Study Strategies Course and Curriculum. She specializes in helping students from middle school through college strengthen executive functioning, organization, and time management skills while developing personalized learning strategies.

A Maryland-certified teacher, Vicki collaborates closely with parents, educators, and professionals to create holistic plans for student success. She draws on training with board-certified ADHD psychologists and her extensive background in curriculum development, having taught math, computer applications, theater, and more. Vicki holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Delaware and a master’s in Education from Johns Hopkins University.

Certified Academic Language Therapist & Special Education Tutor

Sarah Summerlin is a special educator and a certified academic language therapist (CALT) with extensive experience working with children with learning differences. Sarah received her B.A. in Elementary and Special Education from Southwestern University and her M.A.Ed. in Special Education (Learning Disabilities) from Western Carolina University. Sarah completed her Multisensory Structured Language Education training and practicums through the Key Learning Center in Asheville, NC.

Sarah has taught elementary and middle school students in public, private, and international schools. Through more than a decade of teaching, she has come to the conclusion that students learn best from educators they trust. She builds a strong tutor-student relationship through engaging, multisensory lessons built on a nuanced understanding of the child’s strengths and needs. Sarah also utilizes humor to keep lessons lighthearted and engaging.

Alvaro Valle, MS

Alvaro started tutoring when he was in high school, and although his methods have changed as his knowledge and experience has grown, he still always strives to help students find joy in learning. Notably, he has consistently prioritized fostering executive functions to empower students with effective learning strategies and organizational skills.He studied Chemistry & Physics at Harvard, where he conducted research on energy storage technologies and found a love for the liberal arts. He then studied urban-scale atmospheric pollutants and earned a MS in Chemistry from UC Berkeley. Based in northern California, he likes to watch and play soccer, read novels and political theory, cook, and play video games. He is also interested in scientific and political writing and has work published in Science, Nature, and the Harvard Political Review.
