I don't think of posting here often. Mainly it's because the photo process here is not as easy as LJ. But the last time LJ gave me a free extension they said next time it's up to me to find a way to pay. So I may be around here more often.

The past three days have been horribly hot and humid. I think yesterday's high was 97. I can see a bank thermometer out my window, and today's high there was 91. I looked up once and it was 89. The next time I looked up, about 20 minutes later, it was 78. Huh? I roused myself from my desk (which I don't do often, except to get food out of the kitchen or when nature calls) and rode the elevator down to the lobby. I had to see if this temperature drop was true.

It was so humid it was hard to tell, but it certainly was less hot. After a few minutes I found myself sweating (does that count as aerobic exercise?) so I went back up to the Vampire Cave.

No sooner did I sit down than clouds swooped in and it rained. It rained hard. Wind gusts of 55 mph. It looked like a hurricane. It was so crazy that Vampire risked his undead soul to go up to the window to take pictures.

(He hasn't spoken to anyone since he got back from vacation. He did send an email to all of us yesterday, though, asking us to turn the lights off. I resisted the urge to reply "Are you so stupid you don't know how to operate a light switch?")

Since Mr. L is unemployed and housebound, I thought I'd make a bright spot in his day by calling him. I asked if it was raining and he said no, the sun was shining, and weather bug said it was 93 degrees.

On my way home I could see a clear line where the rain stopped. One minute I was in the rain, and the next I was back in the sunny sauna.

I wore my walking shoes today, and have been waiting for it to stop looking like rain. I just know that when I get a half mile away it'll start pouring.

We have the blinds open and the lights on in celebration of Vampire Co-Worker's absence. It's so much more pleasant around here. Everyone's mood seems better. We've discussed moving his desk to the men's room, but none of us have a key. Because we're all chicks.

In other exciting news, Frankie is getting emasculated today.

Race

Today I was in my very first race. It was a 5K sponsored by the park district gym that Mr. L and I are members of. We signed up for it a few weeks ago. I must admit that I asked all of my friends if they'd sign up with me, and they all said no, before I asked Mr. L. I never thought he'd be interested in it. But to my great surprise he said yes.

We showed up at 7:20 AM. Right about then it started to rain. A steady, hard rain. The race started at 8:00. We stood in the doorway of the building with about 100 other people until we were told to head out. A gun went off and off we went!

Running is not physically feasible for me, so we walked at a brisk pace. We went down streets I have never gone down before, despite living here for 21 years. I saw homes with beautiful gardens, right next to homes with siding missing from the exteriors.

At several points there were volunteers yelling out times. "Fifteen minutes, thirty-three seconds!" All in the pouring rain. By the time we hit Mile One I was soaking wet. My socks were squishing in my shoes. I was surrounded by walkers, but every so often a runner would go by and the walkers would applaud and "woo".

Finally the end was in sight. There was a chute made up of ropes so each person could cross the finish line. I surged ahead so I could beat Mr. L (that was my only goal, after all) and then made a bee-line for the gym. Pancakes! Sausage! Coffee!

Afterwards we got in the car, soaking the car seats, and came home with t-shirts and coupons for local businesses. Despite the rain it was a lot of fun.

Ooh - ! Sunset Boulevard is on TV!

This weekend was Frankie's first vacation trip. I'm happy to say he was very good about it all.

I saw this in the Thinkgeek newsletter today:

Lite Brite Squared

I am telling myself that it would be foolish to get it. Wouldn't it? I had a Lite Brite as a kid and re-used the black paper until it all fell apart. Then it was stored in the attic, and one of the plastic pieces with all of the holes in it melted during the summer heat. Wah, no more Lite Brite. My childhood was ruined.

Maybe I can justify spending $23 by telling myself it would fix my ruined childhood and I will become a well-balanced, happy adult.

Oops

I ordered a bunch of t-shirts from Hanes online. Instead of a sand-color long-sleeved t-shirt they sent me a bra. Size 44 G. Wow.

I have horse show photos to post as well as Miller Park photos. I spent Thursday through Saturday at a horse show, and today at a Cubs/Brewers baseball game in Milwaukee. I'm looking forward to going to work tomorrow so I can sit at my desk and rest.

[livejournal.com profile] semyaza clued me in that today is World-Wide Labyrinth Day. I see from this labyrinth locator site there are a few in Illinois and Wisconsin. I'm going to have to check them out.

I have a friend that I worked with about ten years ago. She lives on the south side of Chicago, and we rarely got together in person because of the distance. Last fall she suggested that in 2009 we get together once a month for a hike. It's resulted in us finding parks that I never would have thought would be worth going to. I think we're going to have to try one of these labyrinths for our June hike.

I heard helicopters overhead this evening. The last time they did this was two years ago when there was a bomb threat at the local high school. This time it turns out they were filming the roof of an elementary school that closed:

Cook County Department of Public Health officials recommended Thursday that Ridge Circle Elementary School in suburban Leninetown close because of a probable case involving an 11-year-old boy.

I'm expecting a hysterical phone call from my mother demanding I wear a Michael Jackson face mask whenever I leave the house.

Are people really this desperate to stop seeing news about the economy?

I'm watching the noon news. It's been on for five minutes. So far here are the topics:

1. Swine flu is going to kill everyone.
2. The world is shunning Mexicans because they are all infected with Swine Flu.
3. Swine Flu will infect your computer.
4. Joe Biden says not to go on an airplane because if someone sneezes you will get Swine Flu.

Tonight I decided to wash Reuben's legs instead of trying to brush the mud off. I took him in the wash rack (shower), turned on the water, aimed the hose at his legs, and the hose came off the connector and I got sprayed with a full-strength blast of water.

I re-connected the hose, got the 60 pounds of mud off of him, and took him back to the grooming stall to curry him, despite my soaking wet state. After about 45 minutes of this there was a miniature Reuben made of shed hair in the muck bucket. Also on my arms and hands, up my nose, and (gaia, HOW?) in my mouth. At that point I decided that riding was not going to happen tonight. With my luck the ceiling of the indoor would cave in on me.

I am having a cleaning service come over next Wednesday. This is a Big Step for me. I'm excited and nervous. Who knew having a cleaning service would be like having a first date?

So this morning? On my way home from the barn? I drove into a cornfield.

Last night we got about six inches of snow dumped on us. The wind was coming from the north and it was blowing hard. I was heading east on a typical two-lane country road. There was snow on the road from the wind. I was going the same speed as the cars in front of me, but suddenly I was shooting to the right. The car totally ignored my braking and steering attempts. My anti-lock brakes didn't even kick in, which makes me wonder if I was airborne. As I went off the road I saw a Do Not Pass sign right in front of me. Fsck, I thought, that's going to dent my car! However, the car decided to fake me out and go to the left of it, missing it by about a foot. It finally came to a stop in the cornfield.

I couldn't go forward or backward. I called AAA. The woman said the tow truck would be there within the hour. As I waited a few people stopped to ask if I was OK. One older guy, when I told him yes, I was fine, said "So that's where you meant to be?" He then offered to wait with me for the tow truck. I passed, but was touched by his concern. A bit later a guy came to see if he could pull me out, but there wasn't anything he could attach a chain to. Just then a cop came up. I told him AAA said they'd have someone within the hour, and he said he just spoke to a guy who was told there was a three-hour wait. He said if someone didn't show up in an hour I should call 911 and the sheriff's dept would give me the number of a local place. I had no idea there were so many nice people in the world.

Five minutes later the tow truck arrived! He pulled me out and I went on my merry way. I felt a little better when he said he had already pulled six people out this morning. Then I felt a lot better when I saw TWO cars in the ditch on Rt 20.

Whee! Spring!

Spring!

Mar. 15th, 2009 05:42 pm
lenine: (BoschBird from semyaza)
Today I was sitting outside for the first time this year. I heard an odd bird noise, and looked up to see a huge flock of sandhill cranes fly overhead! There must have been 200 of them. That means spring is really here.

Frankie the puppy went for a "walk" for the first time today. We walked on a leash up and down the street. It really was just him walking and me making sure the leash never got taut. He's having a great time in the mud, but resenting the resulting baths.
lenine: (Dudley)
Oh my gosh, is there anything as wonderful as a collie puppy?

We went to pick him up and he had gotten his first bath today. He's all fluffy and smells like shampoo.

He cried for about one minute in the car on the way home, and then was silent for the remaining 44 minutes.

Once home he walked around, checking everything out, but didn't chew on anything. He played a bit, and then settled down on the floor while I did things in the kitchen. He sniffed at his food, but didn't have any interest in eating it, or in drinking water. That's no big deal. This is all new stuff, and who can eat when they're so excited?

I put him in his crate and went to pick Dudley up from the groomer. It takes six hours for him to get a bath, due to the drying time. While I was paying I told the woman "He has a new puppy brother waiting for him at home." One of the ladies in the back said "So you have three collies now?" I said no, we lost Louisa to lepto last October. They were all very sad to hear it. I was flattered that they remembered her. After all, so many dogs go through their doors. One of them said "She was just here in October!" And yes, she was. It made the pain of losing her fresh again. We still miss her terribly. I still look at her place in the TV room under the window and wish she was there.

But what can make anyone happier than a puppy?

Dudley came in the house and completely ignored the new guy. After a few hours he decided to join us playing on the floor, but once he started barking new puppy put a lot of distance between them. All of the adult dogs at the breeder's house are de-barked, and he is not used to a full-voiced dog barking.

Aroung 10 PM I put him in the crate, and he fell asleep. An hour later I woke him up for a potty break, but didn't scoot him out the door immediately, and he went in the livingroom doorway. Oops. I guess I learned my lesson. It's so funny to have a baby again. Especially because the breeder didn't do any housetraining with him. That's OK. Dudley will teach him the ropes.

Only two photos so far. It's hard to take a picture of a puppy who is always running toward the camera.

Grr. LJ is not letting me insert images from my scrapbook. Look at my previous post for a photo. I'm sure I'll have 12,000 of them to post tomorrow.

I was quickly reminded of Puppy Rule #1: Puppy goes outside the moment he wakes up.
