Emerald Fennell to film is what Colleen Hoover is to literature
Realizing that Emerald Fennell so wildly misread this novel as a swoony teenager and that it then became a core artistic touchstone for her really unlocks her whole deal. Jettisoning the text's intrinsic racialism, classism, and story of abuse as love in favor of recasting Cathy and Heathcliff as doomed lovers locked in mutual acrimonious kink is certainly an eminently memeable take, and fealty to source is no barometer for success in adaptation, but this movie isn't even momentarily discomfiting to compensate.
I really enjoyed that one part of this movie where Heathcliff looks right at the camera and says, "It's Wuthering time."
