Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence—such as understanding language, recognizing patterns and generating content. Generative AI (GenAI) , a rapidly evolving branch of AI, can create new text, images, code and more based on user input.
The University Library is committed to ensuring that all Tar Heels have access to AI tools and the knowledge to use them thoughtfully. We’re not here to tell you to use AI – we’re here to help you understand it. Access, ethics, and privacy are foundational to all of our programming, so you can make informed decisions in a world shaped by AI.
How the Library Supports AI
The University Library is committed to supporting the campus community in understanding and responsibly using AI technologies. Services include:
Instruction and Workshops : Learn the fundamentals of GenAI through library-led sessions integrated into courses or offered as standalone workshops .
Consultations : Meet with Library experts to explore AI tools, brainstorm project ideas or receive guidance on ethical and effective AI use.
Mentorship: The Library AI Fellows Program , sponsored by the Office of the Provost’s AI Acceleration Program, organizes a cohort of 5 undergraduate students who learn about Generative AI and organize events.
Access to Tools : Explore a curated selection of AI models available through the Library. PromptLab provides a sandbox environment for experimenting with AI tools in a low-risk, exploratory setting designed for learning and discovery.
