10:30 am - Advanced AO3 searching
I wish I'd bookmarked (or reposted, ha!) that way of linking to another dw post, but I didn't, so here's a link to a very useful set of advanced search techniques for AO3. Looking forward to folding these into my toolkit for extracting exactly what I want from the vast fanta-sea.

5:47 pm - hot holiday hassles
I've been really pushing myself socially over the xmas/new year's break and all the talking to my friends and sometimes even strangers is really leaving me with very few spoons for posting. But I am still really enjoying seeing lovely people's posts and I look forward to having some time alone in my house to catch up on all the reading. It is so hot right now here, and that makes it very difficult to squeeze in all the things I want to do online.

I have seen a bunch of movies lately though. Since Venom, I've seen Into the Spider-Verse (wonderfully comic-inspired, but very flashy and bright), Bumblebee (Bumblebee can Get IT) and Wreck It Ralph 2 which I found funnier and much more savvy than the original.

I'm pretty sure when I was a kid the messages from kids' movies were things like "do what your parents tell you" and "don't lie". WIR 2's message is "Your friends are different people from you and sometimes it hurts when they want different things, but you're their friend and you love them, so you have to let them be themselves." which is like. WOW. Such a good message.

Also, I felt very targeted by all the internet in-jokes, and I'm looking forward to a rewatch to catch even more of them.

1:31 pm - my fannish history
I've been reading slash since I googled to win an argument about Buffy and found some explicit Spike/Xander slash instead. I was hooked right from the start.

The first thing I wrote was in response to a fade-to-black Willow and Tara scene. I wanted to see them make out!

Ever since then I've written little bits and pieces, but mostly lurked and commented. I've done some beta reading.

The funniest and best thing I wrote in collaboration with lovely [personal profile] coruscera. Is it wrong to say that I reread it pretty often, and it still makes me laugh? Mainly because it was written from my memories of things that actually happened in stories I've read: both slash and trashy supernatural romance novels, which I have a weakness for.

Special Circumstances Questionnaire for Sexual Partners (Male): Long Form

It recently hit 2000 kudos and I'm super proud of it. <3

8:27 pm - Rec: Writing out The Odyssey by hand
I've been posting for about a week here, somewhat on my twitter [twitter.com profile] _linbot, and on AO3 comments and I can just feel that I'm about to suggest something dumb, or call someone by the wrong pronouns or fuck up in a way that's going to make me spiral.

Hopefully by posting this I can both manage my own expectations about how only fucking up once in WHOLE WEEK of posting is actually pretty great, and also be reassured that nobody much cares if/when I do fuck up.

Fun hobby rec: Writing out The Odyssey by hand.

This started about six months ago when my housemate gave me Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey in a beautiful hard covered book for a very early birthday present.

My handwriting has always been bad. I lot of women I know say that, but srsly, mine is pretty awful. But the deliberate (and slow) nature of handlettering gives me time to think about what I'm writing and because it's written in pen, there's no point worrying about it.

I'm on my fourth A4 notebook (which sounds like a lot, but I'm only writing on every third line, and only on one side of each page because the ink runs), and I'm just finishing Book Three: An Old King Remembers. It should be called, An Old King Gives Way Too Many Details About Animal Sacrifice. Yikes.

Cut for a couple of verses from The OdysseyCollapse )

And here's a picture of my lovely cat, Stanley, Lord Kittypants, ~helping.
A cat sits on a desk on a notebook in the background The Odyssey is propped open

And one last thing. I know the story is about 2500 years old, buuuuut. I'm reading it for the first time as I go, so please no spoilers? (I am aware this is ridiculous.)

1:57 pm - Youtube rec: jacksepticeye playing Subnautica
I've been trying to post more comments on stories at AO3 as I read them and that's going very well. Thank them for the story, point out something I really liked, try to make their day. <3

I really want to be writing more in here, but I had an unexpectedly social day yesterday.

Cut for some meandering complainingCollapse ) Today will be spent recharging by playing Blueprint Tycoon so I can investigate P2P fandom ideas in the next few days.

Youtube rec: jacksepticeye playing Subnautica. I can't seem to bring myself to play Subnautica because I honestly find the deep dark sea full of horrifying monsters too much, but I love watching someone else do it. Jack is a sweet boy and I find his accent and screeching in terror very soothing. Playlist

10:48 am - Podcast rec: The Worst Bestsellers
I listen to a lot of podcasts, and The Worst Bestsellers is probably my favourite.

Renata and Kait are women, librarians and fandom aware (at the very least), and I love how they talk about best selling books that suck in various ways. If you've read the book that's the topic of an episode, that's a bonus, but unnecessary with their hilariously rambly and "just the best bits" recaps of the books.

They also have an ongoing relationship with Twilight. <3

The Worst Bestsellers uses Patreon to avoid ads, my favourite way for podcasts to make themselves viable.

And the last thing I have to mention is their adorable game: The Rock, Paper, Snikt! Basically they make their guests choose between adding The Rock to the book, adding Wolverine (frequently in his sadness cave) to the book, or leaving it as it is (usually to spare The Rock and Wolverine the pain of engaging with the terrible book).

Highly recommended! Their website has lots more details: http://worstbestsellers.com

Next up is The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough and I can't wait to pause whatever other podcast I'm listening to in favour of them.

2:18 pm - wanna play a game with me?
So... is anyone else playing Pokémon Go, maybe way too much? I started playing it soon after it was released and go through periods of intense interest, then it's either too cold in winter, or much much too hot to go outside in summer. I can see very hot days coming, but lately I walk in the early morning to make the most of the cool of the night.

Pokémon Go is such a wonderful excuse to get out of the house and go for walks in parks with my RL friends. It's really revolutionised the way we hang out and I kind of love it for that reason alone.

If you're interested in receiving Australian gifts in the game, add me! 7310 9212 2340.

I also play a bunch of games through Steam using this pseud, so add me there if you want to check that out. Lately I've been playing a bunch of Starbound and Two Point Hospital. In general, strategy and sim games are my bag.

This is a story about blood, menstruation and me coming to some harm, so if those things bother you, now would be a good time to stop. It has a pretty happy ending though, and I think there's a few lessons in here for me, at the very least. Maybe it will help you with something you've been thinking about too.

1:47 pm - Special Circumstances Questionnaire for Sexual Partners (Male): Long Form
Title: Special Circumstances Questionnaire for Sexual Partners (Male): Long Form
Authors: [personal profile] coruscera and linbot
Fandom: Meta fandom
Pairings/Characters: None
Rating: Explicit

Summary: Does having sex with you entail becoming married, whether legally, magically, physiologically, or some other de facto permanent relationship? Y/N If Yes, please describe our new life together.

Notes: This started in a conversation between us about how knotting without permission is practically non-con and how important it is to know exactly what you’re about to sleep with, or, as coruscera summarised it: “I'm just saying, it's good to know what you're signing up for *before* cocks are in places and shit cannot be taken back.” And then linbot realised that a bunch of truly bizarre things have happened in slash stories she’s read, so the questionnaire got longer and longer.

coruscera: I feel like there needs to be a question that would specifically cover the potential for getting fucked by tentacles, and/or penetrated by multiple cocks/tentacles at once. Ahem.

linbot: Ooh, nice one. *ponders*.

linbot: Section Two: Bonus Appendages.

6:32 pm - Pod Aware!
I would love to be making a long post about all the various aspects of podslash that I love for the [community profile] pod_aware's Podfic Awareness Week, but some family stuff has left me feeling incapable.

There's lots to celebrate, and my huge collection of podslash is one of things I'm doing to dig myself out, so ♥ for everyone involved.

3:29 pm - linbot tries "Invite people to AO3". It's super effective!
I freaking love the Archive of Our Own. Sometimes I feel like just grabbing fen on kinkmemes and raving to them that they could be posting their stories on the AO3! And then I could read them easily! And wouldn't that be wonderful!

And shockingly enough, a variation on this grabbing/raving plan seems to have worked. :D I sent two messages to people who I've never actually interacted with. Low pressure offers of invitations to the AO3, so they could repost their kinkmeme stories there if they wished, and holy crap, it worked. Sweet!

Fandom is so lovely sometimes.

So, while I'm raving about AO3, here's some of my favourite things about it, that you might not know:

[personal profile] eruthros has a great post about the recent LJ security bugs where people can see others' journals and protected posts. o.O

So I thought I'd follow [personal profile] dodificus's example, and post some dreamwidth codes:
