“What is the black stuff?!”

Needless to say I get this question a lot. A LOT A LOT. Rarely a person will ask nicely and actually compliment my work. Mostly it is a rude, blunt, “what’s the black stuff?!” 
Sad face.

It’s not an adhesive. 
Apparently it looks like black pitch to many people and I think that’s neat.

It’s a technique that spans most of the work I create.   It’s currently a part of my style that I’ve been using variations of since I started making bone centric dark art 11 years ago.

Think, creating texture on a clay sculpture. It’s merely texture that is painted to create contrast. So I took the idea of “stippling” and other forms of creating texture on sculptures and did my own thing with it.  It’s not always black. It’s whatever color I paint it.
