nobody understands [love] better than chefs. To gather ingredients with care, to measure and hold and wash and chop and heat and rest and season—this is care. This is love. I first encountered Nikki Giovanni’s poetry as a middle schooler. My best friend—three years ahead of me—had read her work in English class, I think, and was obsessed. We’d been friends since I was seven years old—a sisterly kind of love—and I inherently trusted her opinion on everything, especially the arts. I loved anything Patti loved, even if I didn’t fully understand it.

Registration - Let's Begin Again
February 18, 2026 6:00 PM - 7:15 PM CST Zoom - FREE Let's Begin Again This year, Mardi Gras shares the date with lunar new year. As we shed the wood snake and move into fire horse energy on Ash Wednesday, let's carve out space to read, reflect, and write. We can shape ourselves inside of this cosmic new beginning. Together, we will read and briefly discuss Major Jackson's "Let Me Begin Again." A majority of our time will be spent writing, and we will come together as a group at the end and all participants will have an opportunity to share their writing. All registered participants will be sent a recording of the session upon its completion. The zoom room will open 15 minutes early for optional socializing time. We will begin our workshop promptly at 6 PM and end promptly at 7:15!

Few authors of any genre have the distinctive voice of Anthony Bourdain. Reading anything he’s written on paper is the equivalent of watching him speak on television: you can literally hear the words come out of his mouth as if the passage were filmed. Of course, this voice—this persona—was carefully developed using diction and tone. “Voice” may be tricky to grasp as a concept, but the tools of our craft can help us develop our own—and of course, we can learn from the best.

The woods are radioactive—reminiscent of Dante’s, with a glowing Hell in the middle. But wolves stalk inside like a fairytale. In this portrait of an ecologically surreal landscape, Stacey Balkun’s debut collection, Sweetbitter intimately follows the thread between desire and danger:

Stacey Balkun’s debut full-length collection, Sweetbitter, is an examination of youth, gender, sexuality, and yearning at an atomic level.
