The Windows dual boot that won't/Linux video editing software
As I posted to a usenet windows group, and you folks will probably find amusing <G>.
Up until recently I was running a dual boot system. Win2K and Debian Linux. Things were running fine, then I started have some problems so I decided to upgrade the hardware.
Upgraded to:
K7VTA3 Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 3400 Processor
ATI Radeon 7500 All-In-Wonder (Used on original system with no problems)
Maxtor 120GB Harddrive (Partitioned into 2 30GB windows partitions and a 60GB
linux partition)
17" Megavision TFT LCD Monitor
Linux installed just fine. Windows bombs every time I try to install. It appears to install then freezes up at the "Windows 2000 Professional" splash screen. Interestingly enough, when I tried to install Windows98 I also had MAJOR problems.
Anybody have any idea what's going on? I have NEVER heard of an install sequence where LINUX works fine and WINDOWS doesn't.
One suggestion made on that group was that the Win2K cd might be toast.
I had thought of that one actually, and tried on a separate lower grade system:
onboard VIA Samuel2 1Giga Pro processor (133MHz)
VIA VT133 chipset
onboard video, audio and network
1/2 Gig of RAM
Same monitor
Win2K installed with no problems at all.
While this does give me a Windows box for some of the things I still need Windows for (ie, can't convince everybody I contract for to switch to linux <G>) it doesn't give me Windows on the box with the video capture card. Which means that until (and unless) I figure out what's going on I am going to have to transfer back and forth between two machines (one of the roomies has a video capture card on his machine) so that I can do the capture and edit work I do on occasion.
Anybody ever see this happen before?
On the flip side. Does anybody here know of either freeware or low cost video edit software that (preferably) has a .deb install? I commonly capture to and edit as straight .mpeg (ie mpeg1). Having .mpeg2 would be nice but not absolutely necessary. I've tried to STFW <G> but apparently I am not setting my search parameters correctly.
So yes, I have a relatively high-end system where Linux, including sound, installs and Windows won't. Eat your heart out BG. Eat your heart out. <G>
