Some nvidia stuff now

I'm recieving this error upon trying to modprobe nvidia.
"FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r13/video/nvi
Is this common? I've been trying to find an answer using google, but there seems to be a bunch of possibly reasons and numerous 'it just worked' solutions.
Anyone have a thread a spiffy solution to this problem?
