Security monitoring solution?

I'm currently looking to implement 1-3 cameras in my townhouse for security purposes. We've recently had suspicious activity around our house and I'd prefer to get it on camera if possible. Has anyone had any good experience with either USB or ETh based cameras, and if so, what software are you using? Zoneminder seems to be the best package out there but I'm open to suggestions/etc.
