gentoo - no arch set?

Okay all you gentoo fans.
After my last post you all convinced me to give gentoo install another shot.
Well 2004.3 automatically detected my sis900 and connected to the internet flawlessly. I was amazed and in high hopes from the get go.
I've spent hours and hours yesterday trying to set everything up just perfectly. I wanted to do a stage 2 install so I could pick and choose which apps are used and which are not, but I ended up doing a stage 3 install because I don't know enough about USE flags and which programs need what, and what programs conflict with others, etc. Besides, to even get gentoo installed on a stage 3 is a feat for me.
Now I'm to the point of
emerge gentoo-dev-source
however it gives me an error that I can't solve and cant find a solution for
"ARCH not set! Are you missing /etc/make.profile symlink? Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?
I know I have make.profile but I don't know if its correct or not.
I'm not sure what to do now.

You all convinced me to throw out SuSe and dive into the complex world of gentoo, now.. help.. please?

Edit: my 3rd attempt to properly install gentoo just failed.
Crappy ole SuSe is lookin QUITE good right about now.
