Back in the long ago days of 2001 (1 Dec, to be precise) Imagemrbad wrote that he wanted to run certain programs at startup and before login and that he was trying this though rc.local. His problem was largely that the programs required X-win, and X-win is the last in the string of rc.local:

I have a few programs I would like to startup using /etc/rc.d/rc.local. I tried configuring them using chkconfig but it returned a message saying not compatible....

The programs I want to start seem to be "X" based. I also tried to start up a simple "xterm" to no avail... ?

What would the start-up method be for these programs? ie: One of them is "xosview" and the "firestarter" GUI...</p>

thks !

I had a thought: why not run these from /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 and kill the processes in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession as I did with my xflame background hack? Of course there are a whole raft of security issues with running functional data modifying code as root, in this manner, which is how they'd run using this method and I'd definitely discourage anyone from trying it, but if that's the only option and the functionality is required? Okay.
