Problems with fresh Debian Woody Install

Hello,
I've just installed Debian Woody 3.0r4 (i386) with the 2.4 kernel on my HP NC6000 after much reading and researching on the subject. This is my first Debian installation and only experience with linux besides my main box running SuSE 9.2.
I went with an extremely trim base-config, chose to not install anything via "Dselect" or "Tasksel" during initial installation. After, I ran an "apt-get" for the X system and mdetect, no problems detected but I had to shutdown right away as I had to leave, so I hadn't had much of a chance to really check. Now, whenever I boot up and try "startx" (as both root and user) I get:

"Fatal Server Error: No screens found"
Then some info on reporting the issue and then:
"XIO: Fatal IO Error 104 (Connection Reset By Peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining"

Thats all that happens after a brief flicker when I try to start X. Any ideas on wot the issue may be or how to correct?
My best and only guess is that Xfree86 detection failed for my LCD, but as this is one of my first linux attempts, I must admit I am not terribly skilled in the field yet.

Cheers,
D
