RAID controller experiences

I have a Promise SX4000 that I cannot get to work reliably under SuSE 9.0, let alone 9.3.

I am looking for suggestions on supported controllers (not SATA) for GNU/Linux, specifically SuSE 9.x. I know I can do a software RAID, but that is not my preference, I want to go the hardware route.
