Without X...

My friend bought the old notebook (for what?) equal to ~486 60MHz. He wanted Linux and I installed Mandrake 9.0. But we have a problem: which programs can be used in console to make computer fully operational? I mean: text and table editor (not vi!), picture viewer (if possible), etc.
