i'm brand new to linux and have mandrake/mandriva linux 2005 limited edition. i think this is debian, but i really don't know what that means. i want to install an application. how do i do that?

the first app i want to install is bittornado (bittornado.com). it gives me a zip of the "source package." what do i do with it? please consider when answering that all i've used in the past is windows.

an additional question -- my usb mouse and keyboard do not work in linux, but they do in windows. i had to plug in a ps/2 mouse and keyboard so that i could have something for linux and they work fine. i like my usb stuff better, so how do i get it to work??

sorry for asking so many questions here...i just want to be a happy linux user :-)

thanks.

EDIT: SUPER NEWBIE QUESTIONS - how do i shut down from command prompt? also, how do i access my windows partition's files? i do not understand the filing system of linux. i know everything comes down from home/ instead of c:\, but i don't understand really. also, can i access my files that i downloaded in linux from windows? thanks for you help.
