top ranking OSS education site says b'bye...
I've made the decision to not renew my registration of the domain, school-library.net, the website where I've created (with much sweat and love) a vast site of educational resources, including much of my own curricula, and advocacy for open source software in public schools.
As I am no longer teaching, I have not been maintaining the site and can not justify the expense of registration and hosting for the site. I've already canceled the paid hosting at tripod, so the site is now hosting Tripod sponsored ads again. The domain will expire next month. The site will remain where it is, but only at http://baldwinets.tripod.com , and plastered with advertisements.
The domain and various porions of the site are amongst top rankings in google searches (and others) for OSS and education, schools and linux, and other such searches.
I don't know...I've been considering moving the site to my "real" host, where I host photodharma.com and altartnudes.com and colourfulpainting.com, and retain the domain, but I'm not sure I want to take the countless hours required to update all the links, etc. I have FTPed the entire site to my computer...I have about two weeks to decide before the domain is no longer registered in my name...
I suppose if I knew that the advocacy for OSS in schools there were affecting positive change, I would consider maintaining...
So hard to say. The site does get quite a bit of traffic.
