ubuntu and wlan0 problem

I appologize to those of you (ubuntu people) who are seeing this twice, but no ideas yet on the ubuntu_users group so I thought I'd try my luck here.

*****

I installed Ubuntu on my girlfriends laptop. So far so good.

I got her a netgear WG511T wireless card, which is supposed to work right out ofhte box in Ubuntu.

It doesnt, but I follow the how to for ndiswrapper and setting up a wireless card in the wiki. It works just fine.

I install the Ubuntu addOn zip from http://www.mrbass.org/linux/ubuntu/ (which I like).

I reboot just to make sure everyhting will still work. it does. Excellent.

I run the ubuntu Update manager. Most packages update (barring acroread, libxvidcore44, and mplayer-386)

After it's done, wlan0 stops working. No web pages, no pinging the server.

SoI run the networking tool. Nothing appears to have changed. network, default, activation, dhcp, dns, and all that are still working exactly the same as before. Things look the same, but there is certainly change because it's just not working.

Anyone have this happen? Anyone understand what teh update manager did well enough to make a guess?

I'm running Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog). Barring net browsing the above is everyhting i've done. Anyone?

later,
~joe the confused new ubuntu user

PS. eth0 can still be made to work (there's some lag time) and it's got issues (for example I have to reconfigure a bit, make it default, i think, and then i can ping the server. Still no net connection from it.

PPS. Connection now, but I had to disable the wlan0 and doing so set eth0 to my default conection. While wlan0 was active I could not change eth0 to my default. I would change it and when I reopened networking it would be set to wlan0 again.
