Animating gifs / the mercelous mngs

Other than the script-fu in the GIMP what *nix animated graphic file editors can people recomend. I'm thinking something along the lines of Adobe's Image Ready but better (of course) ;) To edit cell by cell animation, optimise, load and save various formats. That kind of dealy.

Google and Sourceforgeing has resulted in nothing useful so far. :(
