install problems abound
This is really weird.
I'm building a system to run ubuntu at work. I've got an MSI mATX board (661FM3), Samsung HD (80GB/7200rpm/2M/PATA), writemaster DVD-rom drive, 2 512 sticks of ram (mushkin 1G matched set), a p4 processor (socket 775 2.66GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB cache) . . . that's about it hardware-wise.
I've got the hard drive pinned as master (1st set is pinned and the rest are empty) and the DVD-ROM drive is set as the slave (pinned in the center). They are on the same IDE cable with the DVD-ROM attached on the slave end.
Here's the situation:
1. The ram can't be used separately. If I put either stick in either slot by itself I get a single beep and then the monitor never comes on and the system never proceeds past that. If I use both sticks the system will start up.
2. Start up is not the same as install. I'm trying to install Ubuntu (hoary) and what troubles me is that I keep failing at different spots. A list of places I die:
once right at the boot screen before vmlinuz loaded. Kernel panic: attempted to kill init.
More often, on the next screen when loading the boot loader. I sometimes get a string of what looks like hexidecimal code (example: 74 24 14 01 6e 24 39 ef 0f 8d . . .) and then Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in inturrupt.
Once I died on hte language select and twice the system just stopped responding without any errors at all.
This lead me to believe that it was probably bad ram, but the ram seems to work fine as long as they're both in there and the system detects the whole 1G.
Thoughts?
