Hardware recommendations
Hello! I don't know why I haven't joined this community until now, but here I am! A little background, I've been a self-proclaimed Linux nerd for 3 years. Cut my teeth on Red Hat, but recovered after a year and, after some counseling, I changed my religion to Gentoo w/ Fluxbox. But what good is a Linux post without a question, right?
I'm in the process of gathering a list of parts for a new system for the Ladyfriend. This will be a dual boot with Windoze XP and Ubuntu. I'm going to get 64-bit hardware, but for the time being, I'm only going to put the 32-bit Ubuntu on it. Unfortunately, I know only the first thing about Ubuntu/Debian, and my concern is if the hardware is supported in Ubuntu, namely the video card and sound on the mobo. Can anyone say if there's support for Realtek ALC850 audio? My only experience is with AC'97 hardware... And nextly, can anyone recommend a decent video card (ATI, possibly?) that is supported? Doesn't necessarily have to be high-end. I'm currently looking at an ATI Radeon 9550. As soon as I'm able, I'll post the list of hardware I've made so far.
And for the fellow 64-bit zealots out there, I have a box that's a little over a year old with an AMD Athlon64 3200 (754 pin). I plan on this next box also being 754 pin; is there anything I should consider that would make me upgrade to a different pin-count?
Okay, so more than one question, but I'm making up for lost time. Thanks a bunch in advance!
