dual booting; vfat partition randomly eats data
I run FC3 and XP, and my HD is a MAX200U133-72 (200GB Maxtor), dual booted and with a shared vfat partition that I keep my general data on. I have a problem. When I write a new file or directory onto the partition, it has about a 50% chance of getting corrupted, lost, or otherwise just screwed up. This includes system files, for instance, my ssh .rnd file got corrupted and I had to delete it and start over. I am able to restore it in the Windows system checker utility but only in .chk, which makes it a pain to rename and restore hundreds of files every week. (And I can only actually retrieve those files in Linux, which is horrifically ironic and adds another layer of bullshit to the problem...) I don't have this problem on my XP-only or FC3-only partitions.
There are a bunch of other problems I've been having with both OSes, so I might just wipe the HD and start over. However, my idea of starting over is to do basically the same thing, because I *need* to be able to share data equally between the two OSes and I can't buy another hard drive or set up a Samba server. So I would like to figure out what exactly the problem is so I don't go through all this hassle and end up with lost files all over again. Does anybody know what might be wrong, how I could possibly fix it, or how I could possibly prevent this in the future?
