linux, gps tracking, and server security

I think this is a new topic here. Has anyone looking into gps tracking for server security (or other reasons)? We (company A) had a server stolen a little over a year ago and the owner would like to be able to track the server we have now. Is there a good way to do that? I'm not even sure that a system application is what he's looking for. The way I see it it would require aditional hardware or a web based service based on someone e;se's hardware. Does anyone know anyhting about how this tech actually work in practice, though?

My GM seems to think it would be as easy as using his laptop to track the server like he's Dick Tracy, but I suspect he's way off (total lack of Hot Spots around here notwithstanding). However, if there were a stationary program it might be possible to plug it into google maps and get a nice picture that way and possibly an address.

Anything?

If not I suspect I'll just write a script that sends out a ping to our firewall if hte server is moved and hope that whoever takes it plugs it into a network (a very slim chance).
