Fresh Debian Testing install issue with Xorg!

Hello everyone,

Just installed Debian "Etch" testing on my main PC, replacing a SuSE install. Seems that I got to the stage on a base install, but X won't start. I verified that I have Xorg installed (which it seems it choose by default now, thankfully) and what should be Gnome. I have run xorgconfig and entered the basic mouse and kbd settings (shouldn't be an issue) and entered the exact specs for my monitor and even selected the ATI Radeon (general) for my HIS Hercules card.

The error gives me as follows:

"GDM: Xserver not found: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -dpi 96 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/ :0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
Error: Command could not be executed!
Please install the X server or correct GDM configuration and restart GDM"

Once I hit ok, I get the more usual:

"The X server is now disabled. Restart GDM when it is configured correctly."

I have tried all I can think of and am sick of tearing out my hair, so here I am, hoping someone here can help me. I desperately want to avoid M$ as much as possible -- at least for my development purposes, but issues like this really make it hard for me. Luckily, I have this laptop to use for now.

So, as a recap (in case my post isn't clear) I start up my install and cannot get anywhere. It originally gave me the error screen in garbled blue with ascii text in the background. At least now the blue error window is rendered properly.

I would like to use Gnome with XORG, but if I have no choice, I suppose I could use Xfree86 for now.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
D.
