ipod setup help needed (ubuntu)

I'm looking for a program to MANAGE my ipod playlist with.

When I plug in my ipod to my PC rhythmbox launches which can PLAY songs in my ipod but can not add or remove them.

So I quit rhythmbox.

I launch gtkpod and I get:
Could not open "iTunesDB.ext" for reading extended info. Extended info will not be used.

I make my edits and click "Sync" and I get:
Opening of '/media/ipod/iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB' for writing failed.

Then, when I try to see the permissions my ipod was mounted with I see it's mounted rw in mount, yet the OS says it's read-only:
# mount |grep ipod
/dev/sda3 on /media/ipod type hfsplus (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000)

# touch /media/ipod/
touch: setting times of `/media/ipod/': Read-only file system

Also - I do NOT want rhythmbox to launch every time I plug in my ipod. How do I stop that?
