Any thoughts on why my network seems to go down whenever I'm using the nvidia driver?

My specific problems include:

1) when playing a movie with mplayer, the network starts to 'hang' after a few seconds. If I change the screen resolution to something less dense, it will go longer, but it always happens. I've tried using the -cache option, and that still delays the problem. If I go back to the 'nv' driver, everything works perfectly, but I don't have the 3d acceration, nor can I get a screen resolution over 1024x768.

2) when playing thinktanks (the only actual game I play in linux), the network 'hangs' every few minutes of play.

The shares I'm using with mplayer are NFS shares.

The hardware is an Asus MB with onboard 100mb LAN, and 2.8G P4 proc with 500MB ram. The Video card is a GeForce 5500 running on the PCI bus. Distro is SuSE, but I've noticed a similar problem with a box running SuSE9.1, but the hang only occurs when 1) the 3d Accel is off, and the screen resolution is < 1024x768.

In both cases the video cards are on the PCI bus... Is this the problem? Should I switch to a AGP?
