I think I now can classify my feelings towards the Ubuntu phenomeon as "I don't get it." I downloaded an ISO of the upcoming Edgy Eft release and ran it in QEMU. After downgrading to the QEMU release version due to some problems with the new QEMU PC BIOS in CVS, I was...um, well, underwhelmed. I was hard pressed to find much to write home about beyond a stock GNOME 2.16 install on a "brown Debian" (props to
digiroo on that one). Can any Ubuntu non-fanboys out there tell me what exactly is special here? I cannot escape the feeling that Ubuntu has benefited from lots of good Web 2.0-style PR, and that explains it's seemingly expanding mindshare, rather than any substantive difference from everyone else.
For what it's worth, I kind of like this perspective from a Debian developer on the topic of Ubuntu vs. Debian.
