usb boot on lilo or grub?

so. i wanted a something that could serve as both a bootable os in case of emergencies, and also carry files for configurations or watnot, after one really bad incident with backing up someones failed computer with a bootable cd. so, the obvious option would be usb.
soo, i achieved in that endeavor... in a sense. i have a perfectly bootable usb stick w/ 2 partitions, one w/ the os and the other for data.
but it doesnt boot on MY system (supposedly it should according to bios, but it doesnt. i know the usb disk boots, because it boots w/ qemu), so i was wondering if it were possible to boot a usb disk through either grub or lilo (or anything else) without having to copy the kernel onto the harddrive?
