Distro Advice?

As much as I'm not interested in sparking a distro flame war, I need some advice...

My WinXP laptop decided to stop booting a while back, so I decided to format and start anew with Linux. Here are my priorities for a distro:
1) works well on laptops (it's a Toshiba, if that matters?)
2) not too flashy, but not completely command-line oriented. I would definitely like a desktop, since this will be regularly used for schoolwork (especially a C++ class and an Arabic class, so I need non-Latin text input). I've only ever used Slackware without X, so I don't know much about desktops.

Above all, though, I just want a distro that works well on laptops. I've never heard great things about linux on laptops, but it's my only option.

It's also very important that I be able to install from CD. I've had only bad luck trying to install from a network (and I imagine that luck will be worse if I try to do a network install on a machine that won't boot).

Thanks all.
