I've had SuSe10 (in Kde) on my Laptop (which only has a dialup modem) and never had trouble with it.
I have a Dual Boot Win2000/SuSe10 on my desktop; but couldn't get it to connect to the internet. I was told that v.10 didn't support the older dialup modem I had and since I knew we'd be getting DSL in the area in a few months, I desided to just wait.
Now I have DSL. My patner has a WinXP desktop, theres my dual-OS desktop, my old laptop and a friend who stops by sometimes with some kind of apple/macintosh laptop (I dont know what it is just, other than theirs and silver *s*). I've a zoltrix P-600 series modem in Bridge mode, conncted to a Lynksys WRT54G router. The XP desktop and my desktop when running Win2000 are conncted to the router by cable and have no trouble connecting to the internet. My friend connects by wireless, again, no trouble. So the hardware is all working.
When I run under SuSe10 though- I cann't connect. It automatically recognises the ethernet card with a device name: eth-bus-pci-0000:04:00.0 / Intell 82573L Gigabt Ethernet controller.
I have searched online and to the best of my ability to understand the docs i've found (such as at http://www.reallylinux.com) I have the following things set up (or tried) with no luck:
Starting with DSL Device configuration:
Device Name: dsl0
type: dsl
Provider: earthlink
Mode: PPPoE
Started: Manually (although I've tryied on boot, hotplug, etc)
DSL Connction Settings;
PPP Mode: PPP Over Ethernet
PPP Mode DependntSettings: (I leave VPI/VCI blank)
Ehernet Card: eth-bus-pci-0000:04:00.0
Modem IP Address: ( have tried leavingthis blank and alternatively tyingin 10.0.0.138
Device Activation: Manually
User controlled: checked
Network Card Configuration Overview:
Name: Intell 82573L Gigabt Ethernet controller (eth-bus-pci-0000:04:00.0)
IP Address: DHCP assigned
Started Manually
If I edit the above I get a window stating:
Network Device: eth-bus-pci-0000:04:00.0
Choose Set up Method: (Authomatic Address Set up via DHCP -or- Static ddress Setup with space for IP address and Subnet Masks; I have tried switching from automatic to sttic, using 255.255.255.0 fo submask and 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.2, and 10.0.0.138 for the iP (these all were suggestions i found listed on different web help boards to try but none work)
Then I have the window Host Name and Domain name
I leave both of these blank and check off "Change host name via DHCP" instead.
Name Servers and Domain search list I leave blank and clck off "Update via DHCP"
Next screen i have asks for :
Name for dialing: Provider1
Provider Name: Earthlink
Authorization- Username: (my account name) Password (entered)
on the next screen I make sure that provider1/earthlink is selected as theprovider.
I get three options:
Dial on demand (not checked),
Modify DNS whenConnected (checked),
and Automatically retrieve DNS (checked)
Also:
Name Servers: First and second fields are left blank
Clicked Activate firewall (also tried without)
Below this it also gives me IP details:
clicked Dynamic IP Address
Local IP Address of yourmachine: blankd
remote IP Address: blank
Clicked Default Route
KInternet log tells me that:
SuSe Meta pppd (smpppd.ifcfg) version 1.59 on linux
Status is disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
status is disconnected
error: cannot read real interface for eth-bus-pci-0000:04:00.0
So can anyone tell what I'm doing wrong? The ISP is no help (not just that they dont understand anyone running anything earlier than WinXP, but Ive had to warn my partner NOT to call their service number becuase last time they did thinking they'd be nice and let me sleep (they had some software conflict), the ISP instructed them to disable the router, put the modem back into router mode and connect their computer directly to it so that I had to reconnect everything when I woke up). I've googled for the errors I'm getting with very few results, and those I get, I try whats suggested and nothing seems to work :(
