Video Compression and Linux

Dear "LJ Genie" who knows much more about operating systems and the programs that work on them than I will ever know, please help me with this problem.

My sister has recently installed Knoppix Linux on her desktop. I have plenty of .avi files that need to be uploaded toYouTube. However, they are all very near or over the 100MB limit and need to be compressed.

I have not been able to find any software that will run on Linux and simply compress the videos.

1.) What software do we need for these videos (we because they are videos for not only me, but her as well)?
2.) she cannot access the root file/root systems that sometimes say they are needed because she does not know the password, so we cannot really use any software that will require us to verify that option.
3.) If you know, how do we compress these files?
4. )She does have WINE, but it doesn't seem to work as there always seems to be some error message.

Thank you,
Bridget
