Ok folks in case you are not on the cutting edge check out www.archlinux.org.
Arch is my de facto distro until I find out of opensolaris or openbsd suck.
Why? pacman package manager, up2date packages compiled with i686 flags for speeed.
Also be hip and use iceWM, forget all this crazy gnome fluxbox and whatever else....(although scwm does hold some interest I'm not yet that hardcore)
On the programming front: www.haskell.org seems interesting.....although...
www.aolserver.com seems very interesting after I read the Phil Greenspun writeup on it.
Yeah I know I should get good at perl, but hey why not make the jump to hyperspace?
