mandriva question

Although I've been a network tech for almost 8 years (paid...tinkering with computers for 15+ years), I'm new to Linux. Been wanting to try it, and finally got fed up with Vista which came on my HP dv9205us laptop. Blue screens, driver issues. Sucks.

Anyway, I've installed Mandriva Powerpack 2007. I've been happy with it so far, except for one issue. My laptop still freezes occasionally. I've checked in /var/log/messages, but that showed no errors. I enabled KTemperature, but it wasn't high enough to blame it on overheating. I'm wondering if it may be the module I'm using for my video driver.

My card: GeForce Go 6150
Module: ‎Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series

Is there one more fitting I should use? There wasn't one listed for my specific card. After fixing computers all day at work, I'm really not in the mood to spend another couple of hours or so messing with my personal computer. I want it to Just Work(TM).

Any suggestions as to what I could try, or any other places I could look to diagnose the problem are greatly appreciated. Maybe try another distro, Ubuntu maybe? If all else fails, I'm throwing XP on it, although I'd really like to keep using Linux at home.
