Epson Color CX8400 Printer Woes

I bought one of the afore-mentioned printers and just hooked it up. I was pleased to see that CUPS recognized it on the USB bus, and seemed to have a driver for it. But after trying to print from both Firefox and GIMP, it ain't working. What happens is that it'll spool 5-6 blank pages, then start putting anywhere from 1-6 line of gibberish characters at the very top.

Anyone used one of these? Are there driver issues I've failed to find via Googling?
