PPTP VPN Issues

I'm starting a new job in a week or so, and I'm having trouble setting up a VPN tunnel to their servers. I've never had to deal with a VPN before, so it's new ground for me. I was told (with actual IPs & credentials redacted):

To access the VPN you will need to use PPTP, un-encrypted, to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Your username is XXXXXXX, and call me for the password.

So, using the NetManager applet (I run Ubuntu/GNOME) I configured a VPN setup with "Windows VPN (PPTP)" as the type, and the IP address given. I changed nothing under the "Authentication" tab, and under the "Compression & Encryption" tab, I un-checked "Require 128-bit MPPE Encryption". I changed nothing under "PPP Options" or "Routing".

When I try to connect, I am prompted for the username and password. Then after a few seconds I get an error message that there was a connection error. Am I missing some basic step of VPN client-side configuration? Is there a missing piece of information? I'd hate to have to boot my laptop into the Windows partition just for VPN stuff...
