keep laptop running

So what I'd love is to keep my laptop running if the screen is closed. My goal is to hook it into my TV and use a wireless keyboard and mouse to give me a living room system wirelessly without having to pay through the nose and I already have a laptop.

but it would be nice not to have to leave it open the whole time, too.

Is this doable?
