ATI drivers

I haven't used ATI for years. However, my friend is getting a new computer and originally said that he wanted me to install linux on it for him. He told me yesterday though that he's getting an ATI graphics card as nvidia is too expensive for him right now. I don't know how well ATI drivers work these days with linux -- any recent experience?

If it's relevant, I'll be installing arch.
