Computer Problems - Bad Hard Drive?
My laptop is not even a year old. It seems to have errors on the hard disk. When I upgraded to Ubunutu 9.10, it told me there were errors, but we were not sure if it was a bug or not because I looked up the information in the Ubuntu forums and what I was getting also said it was what people who were trying 9.10 before the official release were getting and that sometimes people still got it.
However, today, when I powered on my computer, it went to checking file system. It's done this previously at times, so I was not concerned. However, this time, it failed to mount the file system. I tried ctrl+D like it told me. I also powered off my computer, let it sit for a few minutes, and then powered on again. Once again, it was checking the file system and the error that it could not mount the file system.
I'm currently running off of the "try Ubuntu" option on a USB memory stick.
It seems that there may really be something wrong with my hard drive.
I have a warranty with the Geek Squad at Best Buy. However, I just want to be sure that I should give the computer to the Geek Squad. I don't want to have to bring it to them if I don't have to bring it do them and can do things on my own.
I've a feeling I will have to bring it to them, but just in case I don't have to bring it to them.
When I got to the first part, it says "320 GB Hard Disk, 320 GB/298 Gib/320,072,933,376 bytes, Master Boot Record, SMART status: DISK HAS MANY BAD SECTORS - More Information, /dev/sda
So, I click on "More Information" since it is a link.
A window that says SMART Data appears. It tells me it is giving me information about the 320 GB Hard Disk
This is the information on the screen:
Status
Updated: I minute ago - Update Now
Self-tests: Last self-test complete OK - Rus self-test
Model Name: TOSHIBA MK3252GSX
Firmware Version: LV010M
Serial Number: 58QUC5UTT
Powered On: 97.8 days
Temperature 44 C/111 F
Bad Sectors: 56 bad sectors
Self Assessment: Passed
Overall Assessment: DISK HAS MANY BAD SECTORS Backup all data and replace the disk
Then, I look to see which things have errors. At first I see a green dot and good on things, so I scroll. Next, I find a grayed out dot and N/A so I don't bother with that, either.
However, I come to a red dot and "Warning."
Here's the information every time I see that
5 Reallowcated Sector Count
Count of remapped sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks the sector as "reallocated" and trasfers data to a special reserved area (spare area)
Normalized: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 50
Value: 46 sectors
197 Current Pending Sector Count
Number of sectors waiting to be remapped. If the sector waiting to be remapped is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on the sector will not remap the sector, it will only be remapped on a failed write attempt.
Normalized: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 0
Value: 10 sectors
Being that I don't understand this stuff, is it something I need to go get fixed or is it something that I can fix?
Like I said, I'm leaning towards the former, but if it is the latter, then I don't want to do anything that doesn't need to be done.
