Admitting Ignorance is not Easy :)

Okay here's the issue. The server I've been given control over is running proftp, It's a RH 6.2 box and it's a live server. My point lies in I'm getting bitched at by my 'wiser' linux friends telling me that I have got to get proftp off of that box and use something else. So here is my question:
Can someone tell me where to find any sort of documentation on how to replace proftp with another ftp that is more secure and won't require me to take down the box. I'm not even sure what I'm looking for or I'd have looked it up by now.
