More stupid problems on this stupid computer

Heh, title says it all. Been working on trying to get this computer working... 1500+ athlon on a SiS-based mobo. I thought it was hard drive problems, but I just bought a new (well, that's debatable) 6.2gig Quantum Fireball drive, still sealed in box, so I KNOW it's good. Same problem -- kernel panic: unable to mount root fs on 9:00. I passed a bunch of kernel options through the installer: linux mem=224m (32mb is shared with the video card) noathlon (i heard this works... but it doesnt seem to help me) root=/dev/hda1 . With that last option, I got a new error:

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly. (guess this is progress, I mounted the filesystem)
Freeing unused kernel memory: 160k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

(system halt, of course)

Questions this raises:
Can't open an initial console? Huh? I'm booting from a bootable Redhat 7.3 cd that I installed the OS I'm running right this very second with, so I know there's nothing wrong with the cd or contents or anything.. I had no problem last time (this comp), so I reiterate, huh? If I were to try to pass an init= option to the kernel, what would I pass? I have no idea what this means, tried searching the net for some docs or info, didn't find much (well, I did, but the info I found (editing lilo.conf and stuff) doesn't make sense in this context, as a fresh install.

Help! Thanks.
