I posted a few days ago, asking how to troubleshoot Linux -- thanks for the responses. Now, if anybody would like to help me analyze the data ;)

Apparently my previous problem, of my net connection dying and my computer chugging along at quarter speed was some random thing -- I haven't been able to recreate it since I posted about it. Heh. However, instead, X keeps crashing on me -- when I go to shut it down. I'll attempt to exit out of X to shut down cleanly from GDM or log in as a different user or something, when it'll lock on me -- only a hard reset of the machine will do anything (can't switch to any other terminals, can't close X with ctrl-alt-backspace, nothing. Here's an excerpt from /var/log/messages (if there's any other place to look for X specific messages besides the XFree86.log in the /var/log dir (that just offers startup info, no errors reported)):

Nov 12 07:18:20 hostname gdm(pam_unix)[1329]: session closed for user kale
Nov 12 07:18:20 hostname gdm[1329]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Nov 12 07:18:21 hostname su(pam_unix)[1482]: session closed for user root

That's what happened when I went to close out of my X session. Any idea on how to get more info about that Fatal X error? Thanks. You guyses are superheroes. Like Batman.
