Mad, crazy fun with ports.

Is there any easy way to make a given pin of the parallel port high or low, or (even better) to read the status of a pin? I'm trying to use a Lego Mindstorms controller to get a signal into the laptop (contained within the robot).
Is this suicidal/impossible, or do I have a chance?
