Nobody asked, but it's worth knowing.

I just spent most of the morning trying to get my GeForce 3 drivers working with Quake III Arena under XFree 4.0.3 and Linux Mandrake 8.0. I was able to run at 1024x768 resolution or higher when logged in as "root," but not when logged in as a normal user. I spent most of the morning wracking my brains on this, until I read an article at Little White Dog about EDID second-guessing nVidia's driver about what monitor resolutions are "valid." In the "Device" section of your XF86Config-4 file, add this line underneath the "Driver" line:

Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"

Works like a charm. I can do Q3A at 1024x768x32 resolution with no problems, and the framerates I'm getting with my GeForce 3 are amazing.
