CVS Server Setup

Anyone have any tips on how to keep the CVS user passwords and user passwords on the system in sync? Right now I'm using a Perl script to generate passwords for CVS users and it's becoming painful. Isn't there a way to use /etc/passwd for CVS? I'm running RH8 and the CVS archive will be accessed via CVS pserver. Thanks for any help on this.
