MySQL + ODBC/JDBC + OpenOffice

I'm trying to connect to a MySQL database through the OpenOffice spreadsheet program. I've downloaded the MyODBC and set that up, and it seems like MySQL always refuses the connection for some reason. I tried using JDBC and I couldn't get that to work either. Has anyone else succeeded at doing this? It's driving me crazy...
